Grow a Privacy Fence

Do you have an eye sore you would like to hide? Perhaps that air conditioning unit, garbage can or even something in your neighbor’s yard? Maybe you just need to block the view into your garden to create privacy? An easy solution for screening is an evergreen screen.

Tall Evergreens

  1. Eastern Red Cedar (Juniper virginiana) – 30 to 40 feet tall; 10 to 15 feet wide; zones 3 to 11; sun to shade; intermediate grower.
  2. Texas Mountain Laurel (Sophora secundiflora) – 15 to 25 feet tall; 10 to 15 feet wide; zones 7 to 11; sun to partial shade; slow grower.
  3. Cherry Laurel (Prunus caroliniana) – 20 to 25 feet tall; 18 feet wide; zones 7 – 9; full sun to part shade; fast grower.
  4. Wax Myrtle (Morella cerifera) – 15 to 20 feet tall; 6 to 12 feet wide; zones 7 to 11; sun to partial shade; fast grower.
  5. Yaupon Holly (Ilex vomitoria) – 15 to 20 feet tall; 12 feet wide; zones 7 – 9; full sun; intermediate grower.

Mid-range Evergreens

  1. Needlepoint Holly (Ilex cornuta ’Needlepoint’) – 10 feet tall; 12 feet wide; zones 7 – 9; full sun; intermediate grower.
  2. Japanese Yew (Podocarpus macrophylla ‘Maki’) – 10 to 12 feet tall; 3 to 4 feet wide; zones 4 to 7; full sun to shade; slow grower.
  3. Nellie R. Stevens Holly (Ilex x ‘Nellie R. Stevens’) – 15 to 20 feet tall; 10 feet wide; zones 6 to 9; full sun to partial shade; fast grower.
  4. Japanese Cleyera (Ternstroemia gymnanthera) – 10 to 12 feet tall; 6 to 8 feet wide; zones 7 to 11; shade to partial sun; intermediate grower.
  5. Evergreen Sumac (Rhus virens) – 8 to 12 feet tall; 6 to 8 feet wide; zones 7 to 11; sun to partial shade; fast grower.

Short Evergreens

  1. Wintergreen Boxwood (Buxus microphylla var. koreana ’Wintergreen’) – 4 to 6 feet tall; 2 to 4 feet wide; zones 5 to 9; full sun to partial shade; intermediate grower.
